ABOUT US

Who is TYO?

Tamil Youth Organisation is a youth group that aims to unite Tamil Australians to help us understand our rich and diverse language, history and culture. It is an integral part of an international organisation that exists in Canada, UK, USA, New Zealand and many European countries. Run by youth for youth, TYO hopes to highlight the significance of our mixed identity.

What makes TYO different?

TYO makes it easy for Tamil Australians to identify ourselves with our historical roots. Due to a lack of information and limited Tamil language skills, Tamil youth born and/or brought up in Australia face a great challenge in identifying ourselves with our ethnic background, and understanding the situation, both political and humanitarian, regarding our homeland.
Today's youth are tomorrow's future, and TYO wishes to empower and recognise the voice of the youth, promoting understanding and acceptance between our community and others worldwide. Our motivation lies in the belief that through promoting unity, the Tamil language and culture will be preserved for us and the future youth of Australia.

What does TYO do?

TYO hopes to act as a central communication link, and provide an opportunity for Tamil Australian youth to work together to achieve a sense of identity, to promote and preserve our cultural roots, and contribute towards the Tamil and wider Australian community.

Our projects and events target disadvantaged communities both locally in Australia, as well as overseas in NorthEast Sri Lanka, and highlight the need to contribute back to the wider community. Our events aim to instil a sense of pride and responsibility with the hope of creating good citizens out of our youth.

We aim to help you:

1. Gain insight into your identity: The Tamils of NorthEast Sri Lanka can be categorised into various sub-groups – the Tamils of the Northern districts, the Eastern districts and the Hills districts. As Tamil Australians, we are proud of our culture and heritage, and hope to promote multiculturalism and pluralism in Australia, whilst also promoting our unique Tamil identity.

2. Contribute towards developing Australia: As Tamil Australians, we feel a sense of responsibility to our country and people. Our organisation will promote community projects for the benefit of the greater Australian community. After all, we are proud to be Tamil and we are proud to be Australian.

3. Providing support to our bretheren in NorthEast Sri Lanka: We believe in peace with justice and freedom. The Tamils of the NorthEast have suffered numerous hardships over the period of the 30 year conflict, including severe economic blockages and the mass exodus of approximately 100,000 people in 1995. By raising awareness of the plight of the Tamils, and understanding their struggle against human rights abuses, a lack of basic human security in particular areas and the depleted social and economic infrastructure in the NorthEast, we believe that the world can see that Tamils in the NorthEast of Sri Lanka long for lasting peace with justice and freedom. Our projects will also aim to promote economic and social development for the Tamil people living in NorthEast Sri Lanka.
