Sri
Lanka faces a problem far greater than the escalation of violence-A
Statement by the Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC)
"The fragile cease fire
was all that could be achieved against a background of intense violence
that has prevailed in the country for almost three decades. Sri Lanka
has been the stage of one of the most brutal killing fields, with
hardly any avenues for democratic debate or democratic solutions to
any problems. In fact, no one really talks of democracy any more,
or sees the ethnic conflict or other conflicts existing in the country
through a democratic perspective. All sides to the conflict have nothing
and no one to talk to. Everyone is trying to make their point in the
most violent way possible."

Teacher
delivers long-distance greetings to Sri Lankan orphans-
By
James Mitchell(19/03/06)
"Traditionally, educators frown on
students "passing notes" to one another during class time.
Centennial Middle School teacher Erin Whaley makes an exception to
that rule, transporting cards and greetings from South Lyon students
to Sri Lankan orphans.
Whaley's students are pen-pals with the girls
at Grace Care Center orphanage in Trincomalee, a community long troubled
by poverty, civil war and, on Dec. 26, 2004, the Asian tsunami.
Last week, Whaley returned from her second (but
far from last) trip to Trincomalee, and brought back written greetings
for her students in response to letters sent earlier this year. No
longer a stranger in a strange land, Whaley can tailor the connection
with her South Lyon students to fit individual students on both sides
of the planet."
Building
the Tamil Eelam State: Emerging State Institutions and forms of Governance
in LTTE controlled areas in Sri Lanka- by
Kristian Stokke - University of Oslo, Norway(18/3/06)
"...the
language of Terrorism has been use to deny LTTE international legitmacy
and thereby undermine their political project of Tamil self-determination.
Much less has been written about the on-going political transformations
within the LTTE. This is surprising and unfortunate, especially since
the LTTE is involved in a state building project which may also yield
a transformation in the movement itself. The overall purpose of the
present article is to address this knowledge gap in regard to the
emerging state in North-East Sri Lanka."
Unless
govt. changes thinking prospects of peace bleak by
Professor Bertram Bastiampillai(11/03/06)
"The ceasefire
and a temporary truce are urgent, competing needs if Sri Lanka is
to be a viable economy and free of the disturbance of militant outbursts
of violence. In the last four months, occasional violence erupted
in the northeast. Time and again it was the Tamil people who suffered
the most."
TAMIL
culture - contribution to world civilisation
by Nadesan Satyendra
"If culture
is the distilled essence of the way of life of a people, then, in
the case of the Tamil people, the distillation process has covered
a time span of more than two thousand years. And, today, the Tamil
people, living in many lands and across distant seas acquire strength
from the richness of their own cultural heritage - not only because
that that culture has something to do with their own roots and their
way of life but also because they believe that that culture has a
significant contribution to make to the world."
